Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Why do you use spoken word poetry?

Spoken word poetry is an accessible storytelling method and is an ode to the way in which many rich tales of history have been passed down through generations in many cultures. Spoken word poetry is an act of resistance against colonial practices of knowledge production. It allows individuals to write and recite their lived experiences into existence. There is great power in not only telling your story but being heard. It is also great fun and creative way to communicate complex topics or to explore and engage in self-reflection.

Who is this for?

Do you want to explore your inner creative? Are you interested in poetry and performance? Do you believe in a socially just and equitable world? Do you want to shift the status quo and work towards transformational change? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then this is for you! The process of (un)learning and decolonising our minds and bodies is open to everyone from all backgrounds, all walks of life and all sectors.

Why are some events for WOC or BIPOC only?

We believe in creating safe spaces for people of colour to explore their identities and embark on their own journey towards healing and growth. As we like to focus on individual and collective lived experiences to implore, comfort, confront, soothe, and understand complex themes. We understand that this process can bring up a range of emotions and we encourage participants to embrace and work through these to work towards healing from colonial experiences. Therefore, it is important to hold spaces for people of colour away from the white gaze. We also run workshops and courses that are open to all.
